Conductor

Alastair Merry

Alastair studied music at Worcester College, Oxford, became a lay clerk at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and went on to study singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Alastair has over 15 years' professional opera chorus experience, having worked with the choruses of English and Welsh National Operas in numerous productions. He has also sung on the concert platform with professional groups such as the BBC Singers and Netherlands Radio Choir and continues to be active as an oratorio soloist. He sings with the professional choir of the Temple Church in London. He is also in demand as a teacher, working with primary school children as part of the Primary Robins scheme, and has a number of private singing and piano students. Alastair is an accomplished pianist and accompanist, using his piano skills as part of his music therapy work with the charity Lost Chord.

I am thrilled to be taking up the post of conductor of the Stondon Singers this term. I look forward to bringing a vast amount of performing experience to my work with the choir, as well as my in-depth expertise in vocal technique, varied musical repertoire, idioms, language, and interpretative ideas. An exciting journey awaits!
